Robotics and STEM Enrichment Classes
Grades PK-1
Students in our Discover STEM class will build confidence and teamwork skills as they participate in the FIRST LEGO League (FLL) Discover program. All activities are designed to harness young students’ natural curiosity while introducing them to the engineering design process – Explore, Create, Share. Each student will receive a take-home set of bricks to extend and reinforce their habits of learning at home. In this season’s Master Piece theme, students will imagine and innovate new ways to create and communicate art across the globe.
Registration Fee and Tuition: There is a registration fee of $45 due at the time of registration. The monthly tuition is $60/month for 3 months.
Our Discover STEM program will be repeated three times throughout the year.

Each year, our STEM Lab class will feature new topics and themes to keep STEM learning engaging and fun! This year, our focus will be on ENGINEERING! Students will participate in diverse, hands-on, project-based challenges that will put their design, building, and problem-solving skills to the test. The activities in the class will introduce them to the engineering design process while encouraging and developing the 4Cs of 21st-century skills: Collaboration, Critical Thinking, Communication, and Creativity.
Registration Fee and Tuition: There is a registration fee of $40 due at the time of registration. The monthly tuition is $75/month for 5 months.

Grades 1-4
With the FIRST LEGO League (FLL) Explore program, students in our elementary robotics class will work collaboratively in small teams to learn the fundamentals of the engineering design process – Explore, Create, Test, Share. With the help of LEGO elements and the LEGO Education SPIKE Essential robotics kit, they will use their design and coding skills to create solutions to the problems they have identified. Students will also learn and display the FIRST Core Values – Discovery, Innovation, Impact, Inclusion, Teamwork, and Fun. In this season’s Master Piece theme, students will imagine and innovate new ways to create and communicate art across the globe.

Grades 4-8*
In the FIRST LEGO League Challenge program, students work collaboratively in teams to engage in the engineering design process as they investigate real-world problems that address global issues. In addition to designing, building, and coding a LEGO Education SPIKE Prime robot to solve challenge missions related to the season’s theme, competition teams will also develop an innovative solution that solves a real-world problem they have identified whereas recreational teams will only participate in our in-house robotics challenge. All students will learn and display the FIRST Core Values – Discovery, Innovation, Impact, Inclusion, Teamwork, and Fun. In this season’s Master Piece theme, students will imagine and innovate new ways to create and communicate art across the globe.
Special Notes Regarding Competition Teams
- *A student’s age, not grade, is the deciding factor for who can participate on a competition team. Students who enroll on a competition team must be no older than 14 years old on January 1, 2023, so it is possible that a 9th grade student may be able to participate . This is a policy of FIRST.
- Students who enroll on a competition team will be expected to travel with their families to a qualifying tournament, which is typically held on the Northshore in December. If a team advances to the Louisiana Championship, this is typically held in New Orleans in January. Parents will be notified of competition dates and locations as soon as that information is received from the program partners.
- If any teams advance to a tournament beyond the Louisiana Championship, additional fees and fundraising will be required if the team accepts the invitation.
Registration Fee and Tuition:
There is a registration fee of $110 due at the time of registration for both competition and recreation teams. The monthly tuition is based on the number of meetings in the session, and because this varies depending on holidays, there are slight differences in prices between the classes.
Tuesday Classes: Recreation $115/month or Competition $130/month for 6 months
Wednesday and Friday Classes: Recreation $120/month or Competition $135/month for 6 months

Fall Competition Robotics
August 18 – January 26
At least 3 students must enroll for a competition team in a given class. If fewer than 3 students enroll for a competition team, all students will be on recreational teams or students can request to change classes to one with a spot available on a competition team.
Grades 4-8
It’s a FIRST LEGO League Challenge Blast from the Past as we bring back a former game. In our spring recreational session of Challenge-level robotics, it’s the same quality program you expect from FLL but with all new challenges and problems to solve. Students will work as part of a small team to develop a game strategy and then design, build, and code a LEGO Spike Prime robot to solve game missions. This spring session, we’ll be bringing back our first FLL season, Animal Allies, that focuses on the incredible bond between humans and animals.
Registration Fee and Tuition:
There is a registration fee of $65 due at the time of registration. The monthly tuition is based on the number of meetings in the session, and because this varies depending on holidays, there are slight differences in prices between the classes.
Tuesday and Wednesday Classes: $102.50/month for 4 months

DETAILS
-
The registration fee for classes covers the cost of all supplies, materials, and technology requirements that will be available for students to use during class meetings. Robotics students will also receive a team t-shirt. The registration fee is separate from the tuition.
-
Class sizes are limited. Enrollment and income-based scholarships are available on a first-come, first-served basis. In order to provide the best collaborative experience, each class must have a minimum of 6 students enrolled. If you register your child for a class that does not meet minimum enrollment numbers, you will have the option of switching classes or having your registration fee refunded.
-
Your child’s registration will be finalized once the registration form is completed and the registration fee is paid. For each session, you have the option of paying in full at the time of registration or spreading the session tuition over equal monthly payments (see the individual classes for more information on payment plans). If you choose a payment plan, you will be billed every 30 days from the date of enrollment until the session tuition is paid in full. You can view the billing schedule before you check out. If you register less than 30 days before the start of a session, it is likely that your payment plan will be one fewer month with slightly higher payments than what is listed below in the class descriptions. If that is the case and those payment terms do not work well for you, please email us to set up alternative payment options.

TESTIMONIALS
Robotics is more than just coding and building robots. My daughter has learned how to work collaboratively with others, think outside the box, and celebrate the success of her teammates!
Erika K.Three of my children were on Janelle’s FIRST FLL Explore and FLL Challenge teams. One of the best outcomes from their experience was learning how to collaborate with others. Being part of the team at a young age taught them how to use their voices to share ideas while problem solving as the robotics season progressed. I appreciate that it gives kids a space to practice communication and presentation skills as well as the building and programming of the robot. Janelle’s passion for robotics is expressed through her coaching, time spent with team members, and volunteering in the robotics community.
Gina F.FLL with Janelle not only provided a fun outlet to be with friends, it gave my daughters a combination of social skills in trust and communication, as well problem solving skills in team work and persistence through challenges. As a parent, the FLL community was like an extension of family for my girls, and I am thankful they received such positive attention for such a time.
Nicholas J.My son and daughter have both done robotics with Janelle for 5 years, and it has been an amazing experience for both of them. In addition to coding and engineering, they have learned about teamwork and responsibility while having fun! They have grown so much, and their interest in STEM has flourished over the years from being involved in robotics.
